Bull Creek Escape...Rae Andrews

Bull Creek Escape began with a lovely day's walk and paddling in the water with the puppies. I took several photos this day which was back in the summer months.

I think everyone knows how I love painting water in any form, so this will not come as a surprise to see.

However, that being said, this is done on BLACK VELOUR paper! A double whammy!
I challenged myself to do the black paper, not a color I usually choose for a pastel, and especially not velour paper.

One has to be very sure of the drawing, hence I chose water as my subject. At least I am very comfortable painting this action type of painting which will also be in my book in step-by-step form.

The format is 25.5" x 10.5" (unframed)

It Takes A Village...Rae Andrews

This pastel is in step by step form in my new book.

I did this one on sanded Sennelier paper which is becoming my paper of choice again.

It's a little rough on the fingertips until the grain of the paper gets filled. (yikes)
Although as a rule, I don't usually smudge and merge the pastel unless the painting is a skyscape or seascape.

The sunset is merged with my fingers. I 'sculpted' the clouds this way.All other areas of this painting are not smudged.

This is an unframed pastel 25.5" x 19.5"
$485

Lavender Paths....Rae Andrews

This is an unframed pastel on the new (ish) Canson mixed media paper.

I never use watercolor under my pastels, but decided to try this technique with this new paper.

I used liquid acrylic as a base, just flopping color into the main areas as a base for my pastels. This was totally an experiment for me.

I kind of liked the process, but I am not overly rapturous.

I think it was this paper I was not that in love with. It's pretty smooth to the touch, not a lot of texture.

It seemed laborious to work the pastel over the top They did not glide onto the surface as I am so used to with velour paper.

Of course my color choice of the paper might not have made it easy for me, it was a soft yellow sand, very light in value.

So anyway here it is, I hope you like, it was a lesson learned for me and I might try the process again, but not in the near future.:))

This is a 21" x 29" pastel unframed

"Winter on Dry Creek", 9 x 12 original pastel painting by Colorado Landscape Artist Margretta Smylie Perry

"Winter on Dry Creek"

9 x 12 Original Pastel Painting
by
Margretta Smylie Perry

Dry Creek is a local open space area in the area north of Denver, CO. It is quite extensive, but this is one of my favorite areas. I tromped out in the snow one late afternoon to take photos, but when I saw the coyotes, I decided I'd better beat a hasty retreat! I hoped to capture the late afternoon and the very chilly weather!

Colorado Winter Snow Landscape Pastel Painting "Alone But Not Lonely" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

This Colorado landscape is one of my favorite paintings. A pastel, it depicts a house that is part of an old, abandoned mining camp on Red Mountain Pass above Ouray, Colorado. Buried deep, deep in snow it looked to me as if it was sleeping.
