Treetop Rascals..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on black velour paper.

I rarely use black paper, although the drama of it speaks for itself.

However, it is extremely difficult to get the lights and darks to read on this surface, especially with VELOUR PAPER.

The subject is of Lorikeets or as they are called in Australia, LORRIES..

Little imps which fly all over the eastern regions of Australia and are forever present in the treetops, calling to one another. The colors are truly amazing!

I hope I did them justice here.

This pastel is unframed and measures 9" x 15".
$155 plus S/H

Double The Trouble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Some of you might recognize my boys, this is Pebbles and Bam Bam, the loves of my life!

They are from two photos I had and I wanted to place them in water, to try and get a reflection and ACTION image.

I made the water up. It was a fun image to paint, and I am pretty pleased with this one.

This image is 18" x 24" unframed

The substrate is a dark gray Sennelier paper

A small landscape  in pastels on Sennelier paper.

I am working on simple but dramatic landscapes right now, hence the sunset colors and silhouetted trees.

Sundown Glow..Pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on UArt paper which I mounted to foam core. It is unframed.

I am playing with textures right now with my pastel paintings, and these grasses are great fun to explore with this technique.

Blue Haze Falls..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am in love with unusual formats on which to paint, this long landscape support is one of my favorites.

I admit it can be tricky though. The scene is so stretched the artist has to keep in mind not to make everything explained and focused.

My falls area itself is my main area, or at least I hope it is.

I welcome comments, just be kind.Ha!

Moroccan Charmer..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This guy was in Morocco when I was there about two years ago.
I actually had hold of this snake too.My face was not so calm!

I was so happy with this photo, that even though I don't do portraits that often, it sure peaked my interest. I just had to paint him.

This one is a 15.5" x 11.5" pastel on velour paper.

All That Glitters, Is Not Gold..Pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is only my second effort trying this pastel pencil on cold press watercolor paper. It certainly keeps me interested, so maybe I will do more. I began with a bold watercolor start, then when dry, I worked my pastel pencils and some hard pastels over the top.

I saw a great demonstration by Jeannette Cuevas....http://www.jeannettecuevas.com/#home
(who is the 'QUEEN' of this technique), a few weeks ago.
Although my work leaves a LOT to be compared to Jeannette's lovely work, I am 'sort of' happy with this one.

Aussie Anzac.. Pastel.. Texas Artist.. Rae Andrews

I wish I had gotten this old guy's name when I took his photo many years ago.( 30 years at least)

I was teaching in the country area of Bathurst in NSW Australia.

I had a flex day during the week I was there, so I drove to the wonderful and well painted old gold mining town, of Sofala.
Characters abound here, and they are very friendly folk.

This gentleman was sitting sunning himself and rolling a cigarette, when I asked him if he would mind if I took his photo, he replied.

"She'll be right mate! I get asked that all the time" (FYI ...In Australian, this means..okay!)

So I did, and I am only just getting around to doing a serious painting of him now.Well what can I say, I've been busy!

This is a pastel on velour paper.
14" x 19.5" unframed.

Coupled..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

And now for something completely different!

I started this one a few weeks ago, and I am now finally wanting to get back into it.

It's a pastel on a sanded Richeson board.

Some of you might recall I had a mishap a few weeks ago when my studio leaked and rain splashed my pastel BACKWATER STICKS AND STONES.

The surprise of the lovely texture the rain left on my pastel surface made me want to repeat the whole process, this time deliberately.

I had this close focus photo of marine elements I took in Maui, and thought it was just the ticket to experiment with spontaneous texture.

I wanted the painting to be 'mottled' and 'worn looking, such as one sees when walking around a marina and looking at the ropes etc.

I hope you can see this effect okay, I am sort of liking it.

Whirling Dervish.Semi-Abstract......Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I began this with a pour of watercolor and acrylics on an Ampersand board.
At the time of the pour, I had no idea what I wanted to paint, so I decided to just play with the liquid media.

When it naturally dried, I began to wade through my photos, and decided to use KOI as my muse having watched and photographed tons of these fish on Maui on my last trip there.

I used my pastel pencil to draw the shapes into the painted areas, and then proceeded to overlay my pastels to retrieve the fish.

This is a large painting, 24" x 36" and is unframed. I hope you like it..

$500 Plus S/H ( contiguous USA. only).

Surf Action..Pastel Seascape...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This one is a labor of love.. I adore doing water as a subject. Especially a dramatic scene.
It's not an image from anywhere in particular, just painted with the feeling I get from watching waves at the shoreline.

This image is a pastel on Sennelier paper.
It is unframed.
Size of this image is 12.75" x 20"

Neon Damsels...Abstracted Landscape...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

NEON DAMSELS began with a wash of bright magenta and orange liquid acrylic over a textured board..

When dry, I then began to superimpose my tree forms over this with willow charcoal.

With pastel pencils I first enhanced and subdued some of the colors before going in with a touch of soft pastels, feeling my way so to speak.

I did not like the texture the soft pastels made, so I used a brush loaded with water and flattened areas out, see the bottom trees and shrub areas and foliage.

I had a hard time making fine linear marks with my pastels. Even my pastel pencils are not fine enough, so I used a fine rigger brush dipped in watercolor, and made the branches.

Some final pastel touches were gently integrated over the watercolor and I was happy.

This image is an 8" x 10" unframed pastel on gatorboard.

Village Glow...Semi -Abstract....Pastel over Acrylic and Watercolor...Texas Artist ...Rae Andrews

Okay, I am still doing the pastel over acrylics and using watercolor to pull areas together with this image. I used WILD colors with the acrylics to begin this scene. I think most of you know how much I just LOVE color!

I love the interaction of the mixed media, and it allows me my vibrant WILD use of color.
I think I prefer the ABSTRACT  genre, but thought I would throw this one in for a bit of a break. Hope you all like it.

Back to the studio!

“May Flowers” 5” x 7” Original Pastel Painting by Colorado Artist Margretta S. Perry

“May Flowers”
 5” x 7”
Original Pastel Painting
by
Colorado Artist Margretta S. Perry
$85.00 + Shipping

This little painting is another of a series of paintings done from an early spring photo with leafless trees. I have had great fun envisioning this location in spring and summer regalia! This painting has a larger tree and more wildflowers blanketing the foreground.  I used Wallis sanded paper as the ground and a mix of soft pastels. This painting is matted and framed, ready for a small wall or in a larger grouping.

"April Showers" 4" x 6" Original Pastel Painting by Colorado Artist Margretta S. Perry

"April Showers"
4" x 6"
Original Pastel Painting
by Colorado Artist
Margretta S. Perry
$85.00 + Shipping
This little painting, and several others similar to it, grew out of a photo of bare trees in spring. I loved the tree skeletons and the shape of the meadows, so I started "seeing" them with leaves and flowers. It has been a very creative and humbling experience to flesh out these wonderful scenes. It has a 5"x7"companion piece called "May Flowers" which will be my next post.
This small painting is matted out and framed in a lovely curved wood frame. It would be perfect for a small space in a hallway or bath or in a grouping of other small paintings.
