Orange Segment

5" x 7" pastel painting

I always come back to painting food art. A fresh, juicy orange is not only delicious to eat. It's also delicious to paint because of the colors. I was surprised how my palette changed with this piece. Finding the right color to portray the nuances of orange was the biggest challenge.
My hope is that you'll want to eat an orange after seeing this!

Staged Strawberries by Ria Hills

7" x 7" pastel painting
unframed

These strawberries were originally painted for a start-up business but the project died. I'm happy to be able to finally share this piece. There were many strawberries that applied for the modeling job, some were consumed, including these little guys.

The painting can be cropped to 5" x 7".

crumpled paper by Ria Hills

5" x 7" pastel painting
unframed

I'm addicted! I've crumpled all the index cards in the house and I need to get more. I just love the shapes and folds that they create but I have yet to make the perfect one. Each one is uniquely different.
My daughter is an origami wizard and I was thinking of taking a quick "course" in folding although I would prefer to have my shapes be more organic.

fruits of the garden by Ria Hills

pastel painting
NFS

This is an older painting of vegetables which I had grown in my garden.
I've been busy with my father these days who is going downhill health wise. Because of this I haven't had as much time to paint. I used the photo reference for the February Shoot and Paint art challenge.
Check it out! We already have some great submissions. Artists - come join us. . it's free.

9 x 12 Pastel on Sanded Paper    $100.00 which includes mat, glass and frame.  S&H  $10.00

Well, here it is The Upside Down Challenge from the Daily Paintworks group for the week of June 18 through 24.  I got so involved with two Balance Challenges, one of them the pastel of my Mahjong tiles took me way too long.  I got behind, but at least I got this weeks Old Mill challenge done, and now am ready for tomorrows new challenge.  This will be my Operation #47 second painting.  I will give 10% of the sale price of this painting to Breast Cancer Research.

last hurrah by Ria Hills

6" x 6" daily pastel painting
unframed

This onion's final moment of glory before I chopped it up and threw it in the pan for stir fry.
Another 'paint from life' challenge completed for DailyPaintWorks. I really enjoy on-line challenges when I struggle with thinking of a subject to paint.

overflow by Ria Hills

chocolate fudge pastel painting
8" x 8" daily pastel painting
unframed

My son Jesse was mindful enough to photograph the spill in the microwave when he was preparing an ice cream sundae. He thought it would make an interesting photograph and I knew it needed to be painted!

Now that it's finished I want to create some more spills.
I decided against painting the details of the label partly because I don't want to advertise and I also like the cleaner look of it.

silver thimble by Ria Hills

Silver Thimble pastel painting
5" x 7" daily pastel painting
unframed

This antique silver thimble belongs to my mother. I'm guessing it was purchased in the late 1930's in Holland or Indonesia. I can't ask her because she has Alzheimer's disease and her memories are quite skewed. There are many things I wish I had asked about.

orange spiral 2 by Ria Hills

5.5" x 10" daily pastel painting

Another painting of the orange where I peeled the skin as a spiral. I think this is my favorite of the many compositions. I like the way the white pulp turned out in this one better than the previous painting.
The colors in the original piece are a bit more vivid than what you see. Seeing it in person is so much better!

breakfast egg by Ria Hills

5" by 7" daily pastel painting

It's quite a challenge to get the composition right with an egg. I cracked two eggs this morning and the yolks kept moving around to the side. And getting those shells to stay where I placed them in the albumen . . . I  must have taken at least 30 photos for this little painting before the composition worked for me!  . . . . .click here to read more and find out how to purchase this painting.
