I love to go hiking in Nags Head Woods. This painting is from a photograph taken there. Coming up the trail near these trees I always see a deer so I considered calling it "Deer Jump" but everyone would be looking for the deer, as I usually am through my camera viewfinder, only to find it has jumped into the gulley just beyond these holly trees. They are especially pretty in the spring in the bright sun and fresh greenery of the trees surrounding them. I gave this painting a circle effect with the branches -- the circle of life (Alternate title no. 3). This painting has a cherry americana frame and I used econospacers around the glass so there is no mat. I love this framing technique for pastels. It really gives a quality presentation. This huge and scary looking frog is a study done on newsprint of a plaster frog. It was done during a Dawn Emerson workshop. I had totally forgotten about it. We used to live in Truckee, California where the elevation is 6,000 feet and snow can be very deep. We loved to take a drive through our neighborhood and visit the creek that meandered through. One day the sun broke out of the clouds and lit up the snow-encrusted willows by the stream. I took many photographs and loved this scene and just had to paint it!

I took a workshop recently with a wonderful pastel artist, Sally Strand.

This was the second of three still life compositions she set up for us. Therefore it can not be sold or put in an exhibition as it is not my original creative idea. This is our third still life painting.

I took a workshop recently with a wonderful pastel artist, Sally Strand.

This was the second of three still life compositions she set up for us. Therefore it can not be sold or put in an exhibition as it is not my original creative idea.

These were the same basic elements of Still Life Study #1, but when we returned from our lunch break, it had been lighted with a green gel over the light bulb of the lamp for the set-up. As you can see, it really grayed the colors! This exercise was to learn about how all different light sources, warm and cool can affect the mood of your painting.

We were to pay attention to the front middle and background plains and try to get the values correct within each area. This was lighted with a red gel over the light bulb of the lamp for the set-up.

I took a workshop recently with wonderful pastel artist Sally Strand. This is her model pose set-up. Therefore it can not be sold or put in an exhibition as it is not my original creative idea. Sally starts many of her pastels with a medium value watercolor under painting. Then pastel is applied with cross-hatching in darker and lighter values and a variety of strokes to make an interesting composition. She is known for her wonderful light areas, and rarely uses pure white for her highlights.

Horse Dance by Judith Bailey

I've been studying color and its application so that is why this picture is so colorful. These wild horses appear to be dancing, actually they are fighting, but dancing and fighting sometimes look like the same thing, LOL. Maybe there is a lesson there?
